Trying to navigate the film and TV industry and find work in props / set design can be completely bewildering.

Don't worry - it's not just you.

Believe me, I’m well aware of how bewildering it can be.
It can be tricky to understand what each department does...

Which job roles are available, and which ones you’d like to do...

You might wonder if your background and skill set will allow you to work in this industry, or if it’s too late to start doing so...

You might also wonder if your skill-set is sufficient, or if you need to gain additional skills...
If you think you need additional skills, you might be confused about what skills are necessary, and how best to learn them...

Most importantly, you're no doubt wondering how you actually go about finding work - ideally on decent-sized productions rather than music videos and student films.
Most people say it's just about networking and making contacts, but that sounds really vague. How do you actually go about doing that?

Even if you do start getting regular work, you're probably asking yourself if you can make a living out of it. Or will you need another job on the side?

These are probably a fraction of the problems you’re wrestling with.
Overall, it can feel like driving in the dark... to a place you haven't been to before... and you don't have Google Maps.

And you might feel like you have a faulty headlight as well.

Don't worry - it's not just you.

It was exactly the same for me as well.

But it doesn't need to be as difficult as this.
Like anything in life, with the right knowledge and guidance, the process is a lot easier than trying to work it out for yourself.

My name is James.

I initially studied mechanical engineering and industrial design.

Shortly after graduating, I unexpectedly got a job as an Extra (SA) on a BBC documentary.
I really enjoyed the experience, and it made me realise that I would like to work in the film and TV industry in some capacity.
However, I knew absolutely nothing about the film and TV industry.
As you can imagine, it's not the sort of thing they teach you about when studying mechanical engineering.
As a result, I was effectively starting from ground-zero.
So... I did a lot of research about the industry, watched what happened when I was on set, asked lots of questions, completed various courses, and networked with as many people as I could.

There were many moments of confusion, frustration and self-doubt – as you might be experiencing now.
But it was also exciting to be discovering an industry as interesting, challenging, and varied as this one.
I refer to this period as my quarter-life crisis – an experience a lot of people go through.
Ultimately, I realised I would like to work in set design. One thing led to another, and I ended up doing just that.
Now I work predominantly in Props and Set Decoration. I have also worked in the Art Department on some lower-budget productions.
To date, I’ve worked on productions such as:
-
Bridgerton
-
The Winter King
-
The Gallows Pole
-
The Power
-
The Souvenir Pt. 2
-
Fast and Furious 9
I've also worked on several others that have yet to air.
Having found my feet in recent years, I decided to create this course to help others do the same.

I like to help people properly.
I don’t like being mediocre – particularly when it comes to education and helping people.
To give people as much help as possible, I can only work with a certain number of people at any one time.
