Amber Brookes – Film & Screen Studies graduate, Bath Spa University
The film and TV industry can be completely bewildering.
Believe me, I’m well aware of how bewildering it can be.

It can be tricky to understand what each department does.

It's also tricky to understand which job roles are available, and hence which ones you’d like to do.

You might wonder if your background and skill set will allow you to work in this industry, or if it’s too late to start doing so.

You might also wonder if your skill-set is sufficient, or if you need to gain additional skills.
If you think you need additional skills, you might be confused about what skills are necessary, and how best to learn them.

Most importantly, you're no doubt wondering how you actually go about finding work - ideally on decent-sized productions rather than music videos and student films.
Most people say it's just about networking and making contacts, but that sounds really vague. How do you actually go about doing that?

Even if you do start getting regular work, you're probably asking yourself if you can make a living out of it. Or will you need another job on the side?

These are probably a fraction of the problems you’re wrestling with.
Overall, it feels like trying to drive in the dark... to a place you haven't been to before... and you don't know how to get there.

And you might have a dodgy headlight as well.

Don't worry - it's not just you.

It was exactly the same for me as well.

But it doesn't need to be as difficult as this.
Like anything in life, with the right knowledge and guidance, the process is a lot easier than trying to work it out for yourself.

Therefore, to help you find your first job in set design... and avoid a quarter-life crisis, I created an online course.

To find out how you can benefit from it, come over and have a chat with me.
About Me
Who am I?
How did I come to work in film and TV?
What experience do I have?
And how did I come to create this course?
Pre-Film and TV
I initially studied mechanical engineering and industrial design.
Shortly after graduating, I unexpectedly got a job as an Extra (SA) on a BBC documentary about the Tudors.

Before that, I hadn’t had anything to do with the industry whatsoever.
I really enjoyed the experience, and it made me realise that I would like to work in the film and TV industry in some capacity.
However, I knew absolutely nothing about the film and TV industry.
As you can imagine, it's not the sort of thing they teach you when studying mechanical engineering.
As a result, I was effectively starting from ground-zero.
Entering the Industry
In the following years, I continued to work as an Extra.
I also did a lot of research about the industry, watched what happened when I was on set, asked lots of questions, completed several courses, and spoke to as many people as I could.

There were many moments of confusion, frustration and self-doubt – as you might be experiencing now.
It often felt like trying to build a complex LEGO model without any instructions. (Sometimes I felt like I didn’t even know what the model was supposed to look like.)
But it was also exciting to be discovering an industry as interesting, challenging, and varied as this one.
Looking back, I refer to those years as my quarter-life crisis – an experience that I know a lot of people go through.
Ultimately, I realised I would like to design and create props and sets.
One thing led to another, and I ended up doing just that.
