but isn't sure how to get there.

"This is essential for anyone wanting to join the Art department.”

Claudia Parker – Set Decorator, Game of Thrones

“This course provides an invaluable head start into the industry, and is the guide I wish I’d had years ago.”

Auriol Williamson – Petty Cash Buyer, Hanna Season 3

“This course is an incredible insight into the world of the Art Department. I have not found a more helpful resource than this.”

Amber Brookes – Film & Screen Studies graduate, Bath Spa University

The Starting Point

The film and TV industry can be completely bewildering. Believe me, I’m well aware of that fact.

Several years ago, I was experiencing similar problems to the ones you’re experiencing now.

When I first started trying to enter the industry, I knew absolutely nothing, and started from ground-zero.

I now refer to the experience as a “quarter-life crisis” and I know I’m not the only one to have experienced this.

(To learn more about me and my background, click here.)

I know it can be tricky to understand which positions are available; which ones you’d like to do; and how to go about finding work in those positions.

Furthermore, you might wonder if your background and skill set will allow you to work in this industry, or if it’s too late to start doing so.

This is to name about 1% of the problems and questions you’re probably wrestling with.

But it doesn't need to be as difficult as this.

Like anything in life, with the right knowledge and guidance, the process can be a hell of a lot easier.

Therefore, the best solution is to complete a suitable course.

The Problem

There are several courses out there, but they suffer from a number of problems to varying degrees.

Firstly, the way they are structured means that important aspects are sometimes missed out.

It’s like trying to learn to write, but you’ve only been taught a portion of the alphabet… and you’re not sure how many letters you’re unaware of.

Therefore, it’s easy to come away with as many questions as you do answers.

As a result, you often find that you need to complete several courses from various training providers in order to learn the complete alphabet.

Another potential problem is that a lot of courses are fairly specialised – but this isn’t necessarily obvious.

Don’t get me wrong - a lot of these courses are really informative.

However, unless you already know the basics, it’s easy to find yourself learning something that isn’t relevant to you and your career goals.

Even worse, you might discover that the career you’re aiming for isn’t what you thought it was. This can mean you waste a lot of money on a course to work in a role you no longer want to do.

To continue our analogy, these courses can be like learning to write before you have a firm grasp of the alphabet. After eventually learning how to write, you might even discover that you wouldn’t like to work in a role that requires you to do a lot of writing.

As ever in life, it hinges on what you don’t know you don’t know.

Another Problem

Another problem is that most courses are held in-person, and require you to spend additional time and money on travel and accommodation.

This is an additional cost, and people who live a long way from London tend to be disproportionately affected.

With all that in mind, the obvious solution is:

  • A course that teaches everything in a structured way, covering all the basics first, before moving on to more advanced knowledge

  • A course that teaches you what it’s like to work in each role, and what skills you need to work in that role, so that you don’t waste time and money on learning skills that won’t be relevant to you

  • A course that teaches you at your own pace, around your existing schedule, from the comfort of your own home or wherever else you happen to be

Well that's exactly what this course does.

“James’ course is a clear and concise introduction into the structures and inner workings of film and TV art and set dec departments, and how to navigate them. For those embarking on a film career without the benefit of a film education, this course is both informative and worthwhile.”

David Morison – Set Decorator

(Kingsman: The Secret Service, Pennyworth)

“If you're looking to get into the Art Department, I think this course has value by giving you the ins and outs of a very competitive industry in a clear and concise manner.”

Pedro Moura - Art Director

(The Great)

“This is an excellent course for anyone looking for their first job in film but also for people looking to perhaps change departments. Having done both a Creative Media Skills course in Prop Making and James's course I found James's to be more useful and practical in terms of substantial information and direction for actually getting a job and also being prepared for the first day on the job.”

Liat Peleg – Greensperson

(Brandon Thatchers)

This course isn't like any other course that’s currently available.

This is the course I wish I’d had years ago when I was trying to enter the industry.

If you would like to work in a props or set design role, this course is the perfect place to begin.

Off the back of this course, I’ve given talks to institutions such as the University of Westminster

and University Technical College Norfolk.

I’m also due to give a talks to students at Access Creative College in London and Norwich later this year.

“What James has written is pretty brilliant.

"It's efficient, specific and will possibly tell you quite a few things your teacher, tutor or mentor missed out.

"For those who need that specificity and prefer an understanding of the real world then this is perfect.”

Archie Cameron – Film Graduate

(Access Creative College)

What Does the Course Cover?

The course is divided into seven sections.

In Addition...

As well as these sections, you will have access to:

  • To Do Lists - which help you focus on the things you need to do to get to where you want to be

  • Equipment Lists - so you know what equipment you will and won't need

  • Example spreadsheet to help contact Heads of Departments (HoDs)

  • Example CVs and Portfolios

“When you start in the film and TV industry, it can be a very confusing place, full of different departments, and technical jargon.

This online course is the perfect starting place for anybody considering a career in this industry.

It sets out with clear and concise diagrams what each department does, and the roles for each member of that team.

This course includes the essentials from finding your first job, to practical information about how to write a CV, on-set etiquette, jargon and lingo, and what courses to attend, even to what to wear and take with you.

Everything you need to know from somebody who has worked and knows the industry!”

Richard Townsley – Technical Advisor

(1917)

How Does the Course Work?

All the course material is viewed online.

This means you can view the content from the comfort of your office, living room, hotel room, or anywhere else you have access to a computer or smartphone.

Once you sign up, simply do the following:

  1. Create an account.

  2. Login to the website.

  3. View the content from any device.

You don’t have to download anything, install an app, or do any other technical things.

The course is entirely text-based. This means it’s easier to digest the information and work through the course at your own pace.

It also means it’s easier to access the course in areas where signal is poor, since you won’t need to wait for videos to buffer.

“This course is the guide I wish I’d had a year or two ago.

"It’s expected that in the art department you learn everything on the job, but having the knowledge and understanding this course provides could allow new people starting out to begin a new job with confidence, and save them that horrible beginning period in which you feel bewildered and confused.

"It gives a comprehensive overview of all you need to know when starting out, but most importantly in my opinion, the collation of resources for accessing not just training, but real jobs, is better than any I’ve seen before.

“This course provides an invaluable head start into the industry, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking towards a future in art, set dec, graphics or props.”

Auriol Williamson – Petty Cash Buyer (Hanna Season 3)

What If I Still Have Questions After Completing the Course?

The course tends to answer around 95% of people’s questions. (Given how many questions people start the course with, I like to think this is quite an achievement.)

Once you complete the course, you will be able to get in touch with me and ask any remaining questions you have.

You’re welcome to ask me as many questions as you’d like, and there is no limit on the number of times you can phone or email me.

I want you to complete the course with all of your questions answered.

“Having just graduated from a film focused degree, this course would have been very useful during the course of these years, in particular the final year.

"It acts as a practical guide for establishing yourself as a member of this department and talks you though how to get you first job, as well as what each role entails all the way through to getting paid
and negotiating taxes.

"I have learnt an immense amount from this course, it is clear, concise and detail orientated, and would recommend it to anyone looking to enter the art department.”

Kitty Lower – Film Graduate

(University of Falmouth)

Who The Course Is Not Suitable For

  • People who are not motivated to work hard, act on their own volition, and do everything they can to improve their life and career prospects.

  • People who want an easy, regular 9-5 job.

  • People who think this course is the equivalent of a “get rich quick” scheme. In fact, it's more like purchasing a gym membership rather than purchasing entry to a job.

"I have used the advice to re-write my CV and put together my first portfolio which I have already had great feedback for from Art Directors.

"It has provided me with some great ideas of how to continue developing my skills and knowledge to start building a successful career in the Art Department! Thank you so much!”

Paige H Smith – Architectural Technology Student

(Edinburgh Napier University)

“As someone starting out in an industry as big and complex as film, this course is full of rich advice and juicy info.

"It really drills down into the practical stuff you need to know but are too afraid to ask.

"James also evaluates some of the leaders in the field of course provision for the Art department in a way which could save you a hefty sum and ensure you get the best teaching for your career goals.

"It’s a great achievement and a real treasure trove.”

Serena Murphy – Art Department Assistant (Cobra Series 2)

"This is essential for anyone wanting to join the Art department.”

Claudia Parker – Set Decorator

(Game of Thrones)

How Much Does It Cost to Invest In The Course?

Before I answer that, let me ask you a question:

Question: if this course allowed you to find several months’ work on a professional production, how much do you think it would be worth?

Clue: on a decent-sized professional production, you’re likely to be paid at least £750 per week.

Answer: many thousands of pounds.

But I’m obviously I’m not going to charge you that.

Alternatively, if the only thing this course did was get you one week’s work, how much do you think it would be worth?

If you put in the work, I’m extremely confident it’ll get you a lot more than one week’s work.

Although you’ll probably get thousands of pounds worth of work from it…

And it’ll probably save you hundreds of pounds on courses you don’t need to do…

And it’ll allow you to get to where you want to be a hell of a lot quicker…

I’m only asking £750 for it.

And let’s clarify what you’re getting for that price:

  • Years of experience and mistakes, condensed into an accessible format

  • Unlimited opportunities to have your questions answered

  • The opportunity to escape from your current job and into one you enjoy

  • The means to get into that job in the quickest, most efficient way possible, without wasting time, money and sanity on trying to figure it out yourself

On that basis, can you afford not to invest?

“The wealth of information has been broken down and organised into manageable and logical sections that you can work through, following the advice along the way and make real progress in your career from the first installment.

“If you’re looking for your first job in the business or are feeling unsure of where/how to start this course is perfect.

"It’s a whirlwind of useful information, tips and tricks taken from personal experiences within the industry, all broken down and explained in such a way that it’s easily followed and in no way overwhelming but definitely gets you feeling like you’re on the right track to your dream job.”

Anya Smith – Film & Television Graduate

(University of the Arts London)

What If I Invest In The Course, But Find It’s Not Useful To Me?

If you complete the course and feel it wasn’t useful to you, just let me know within two weeks, and I’ll give you your money back.

It’s as simple as that.

You will not be taking a risk by investing.

Furthermore, of all the people that have been through this course, I'm very proud to say that no one has ever asked for their money back.

“This course is perfect for someone just starting out or in the early stages in their film career, it’s clear, concise and well structured.

"I found the job trees, kit lists, and prop house lists particularly helpful as I had recently relocated

from Canada.

"I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking for an overview of the roles and responsibilities in art/set dec department or is looking for courses, websites, and advice on how to get

into the industry.”

Caitlin Smith – Graduate

(Glasgow School of Art)

What If I’m Keen To Do The Course, But I Can’t Afford £750?

No problem – this is understandable.

If you want, you can pay for the course in full.

If not, you can pay for the course in monthly installments over the course of six or twelve months.

When you click "Access the Course Now" you will automatically be taken to the payment plan page.

Simply select the payment plan the works best for you, and go from there.

“I found this course very informative and most importantly easy to read and follow.

"I really enjoyed the pie charts and how it showed the portions of in-house and on set for each job.

"The course demonstrates a very deep understanding of the industry and for a newbie like myself the information was invaluable. I wish every industry had a course like this and I wish I had seen this sooner!

“The explaining of each role is important but I found the later parts of the course where it talks about training, CVs and when you’re in the job most interesting. For example the explanation of radio and set lingo which I have already put to good use.

"Thank you again!”

Sam Graber – Greensman

(Brandon Thatchers)

What If I’m Keen To Do The Course, But I Still Can’t Afford £750 – Even With a Payment Plan?

Education might seem expensive, but education is a lot less expensive than ignorance.

If you think you can’t afford to do the course, then you definitely can’t afford not to invest in it.

Think of the time, money and effort you’ll save by learning from someone who’s already walked the path you’re walking now – rather than trying to figure it all out by yourself.

If you do try to figure it out yourself, can you afford to work in a “normal job” longer than necessary while you do that?

Furthermore, what’s the cost to your sanity by trying to work it out yourself?

"Given the fact that you are potentially saving someone a lot of research and providing first-hand experience and inside-industry advice, I think the course is definitely worth reading, especially as it is so thorough.

"I imagine you would get your foot in the door as a direct consequence of the course (I had no idea the directories even existed; I knew that you’re supposed to just contact people but I had no idea how to find contact details).

"Plus, it’s a lot less time consuming than doing one of the practical courses and then realising you don’t like the realities of the industry, the working hours etc."

Sophie Haywood – TV & Film Set Design Graduate

(University of South Wales)

What If I’m Still Keen To Do The Course, But I Definitely Can’t Afford It?

If I offered you a brand-new Lamborghini for the same amount, could you find the money?

If so, how?

Take a moment to have a think and answer that question.

So on that basis, you can find the money.

Are you willing to use that same plan to invest in yourself - on something that will pay for itself many times over - rather than a fancy car?

“I really enjoyed reading James’ course. It’s very clear and doesn’t try to be overly clever.

"It answers a lot of those questions that you don’t like to ask – you know, the obvious ones you feel you should already know but don’t.

"Covers very practical stuff like what you should get paid and how to get paid.

"I feel sure the course will pay for itself.”

Tina Warren – Art Department Assistant

What If I’m Still Not Sure If It’ll Be Suitable For Me,
Or Worth the Money?

As I said, if you feel it’s not suitable for you, just let me know and I’ll give you all of your money back.

There’s no risk to investing.

As for whether it’s worth the money, let’s hear from some more people that have already completed the course.

“James has done an incredible job designing this course to cover absolutely everything someone starting in the art department should know.

"I honestly haven’t seen a more comprehensive course that offers advice in everything from making a portfolio, to writing a good CV, as well as a clear idea of the roles of each department, what skills are needed to work there and how to actually find work.

"It’s a rare insider’s view into the industry, presented in a friendly and informative way which makes the idea of working in film way less intimidating for beginners.

"It will definitely be an invaluable help to anyone wishing to start out in the art department, set dec or props.

"It helped me a lot in gaining a clearer understanding of the industry and I now feel more confident taking my first steps in the film industry.”

Electra Pappa – Theatre Studies Graduate
